Introduction to Finance
Foreword from the Finance Manager
Mr Phumelele Shezi – ” The mission was clear on my previous Manager’s appointment on 1 December 2001 – Build a great Finance Department for IALCH.”
What was the winning strategy:
The first challenge of this strategy was finding and motivating the next generation of leaders. Without doubt the Finance Team is made up of the best people who feel they are part of something great. Their level of motivation is reflected in their adopted mascot the “Lion”. It encourages the culture of action, customer focus, innovation, teamwork and integrity.
Customer service has sharply been improved. You our customers are our lifeblood and we constantly take your pulse. We have learned that you value being asked. This continuing exchange of information has enabled us to better serve your needs as we learn more and more about you. Our challenge is to find the perfect match between your wants or needs and what we can offer.
We are very much a relationship-oriented department. We have extended this commitment to forging strong partnerships beyond the departments in the Hospital. Other hospitals in the province and the country at large are our partners as well. The strong alliance with our suppliers has enabled the understanding of our mutual expectations.
Yes we have leap frogged the competition. The financial management systems that we have implemented compare favourably with the best in the world. Despite being one year old, we are already leaders in the implementation of the National Department of Health’s Hospital Strategy Project, which includes among other things the decentralisation of financial management.
Finance has thus far, enjoyed a great deal of success. I’d like to think of it as a great start. We are proud to be part of the “world-class tertiary and central hospital“. Our key to success is knowing our strengths and being open to experimentation. It comes from the determination to learn from our mistakes and looking for ways to continually improve.
I agree with Ralph Waldo Emerson when he says “nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm“.
What does the winning strategy hold in the future?
Our strategic positioning (Link to Finance Vision & Mission) best captures what you can expect from the Finance Team in the future. We will continue to be pace setters in the transformation of public financial management.
We thank you for your support as we strive for “collective financial stewardship“
